So after 3 years of ooh-ing and aah-ing at all the marvelous threadcake creations, I decided to take the plunge this year with only 4 days till the closing date!(procrastination in part due to work and other commitments). "MEOW" is my first threadcakes entry. I chose this design because I loved the idea - cats doing what they do and forming a cute cat face. I thought it would also be interesting (and fun) to form the cats and have them weaving in and out in 3D. As the original threadless design is black and white, it also gave me some room to play with the colours, and put my own spin on the design.
First off, I got my design enlarged to the size of my cake, and worked on the colour scheme - I wanted the colours that are somewhat natural cat colours, but with a little bit of whimsy. Once that was sorted, I got my fondant and gum paste mix coloured, and started working on the individual cats. With each cat there had to be some consideration on perspective and how it fits in with the cats around it - this process was a bit like putting a puzzle together. Having arranged all the cats together, I had to take them apart, paint on the black outlines and other little details, then wait for them to dry before reassembly.
Next, the cake. Decided on a hummingbird cake, with cream cheese buttercream filling. Once covered with fondant, the cats were reassembled on the top of the cake.
Then comes the bittersweet moment when you have to cut the cake, but then you get to eat it too. Enjoyed a few slices with the hubby (who had really gone out of his way over the weekend to help me get this cake done, so muacks and thanks, hubs!), and brought some to the office as well. Not often i get to have my cake and eat it too ;)
