Well so much for not entering Threadcakes this year!! I couldn't stand by and watch everyone else have fun so I decided that I should just do it. Problem was I had 2 days until the deadline and it was a Sunday - so I pretty much had to work with what I had on hand. I started out with a 12 inch board and 2 threaded rods. Problem was the image I wanted to do had THREE flamingos in it - so I had a scrounge around and found a dowel that I could use for my 3rd flamingo. It wouldn't support as much weight so I went with rice krispies for that one. Using Illustrator I was able to give basic measurements for everything. After the structure was made I used some modelling wire to make the head and neck shapes.
The cake I made is a basic madiera recipe but I used milk chocolate ganache for one flamingo and vanilla bean buttercream for the other and the mountain.
I wanted my board shape to be non uniform so I glued a cake drum to one side and later added some cake boards to extend the base.
For the flamingos non supporting legs I used a plastic cake dowel for the short flamingo and modelling wire for the other two. All the clouds and planes were made using modelling chocolate and to support them onto the legs I used a thinner modelling wire and secured it on with florist tape. The flamingos were then covered in modelling chocolate and the mountain and waves were covered in ice wise white fondant.
Once everything was covered and scored I started painting using dusts mixed with vodka.
For the pixellated mountain squares I made a little stamp out of a make up sponge and stamped them on. (If I was to do it again I would have made them smaller).
And that's more or less my piece!! Hours to go once again.... Next year I'll do it well in advance (riiiiiiiight). Hope you like it! I had a blast once again! :)
