Photographer cake by Kristina Stephenson

Description

This was a birthday cake for our on-site photographer, Rachel (hence the "Happy Rachel Day" on the base of the cake...) The Media and Marketing department only said they wanted a photography theme and the actual design was up to me, so I used it as an opportunity to create a Threadcake entry without having an entire cake left at the end that I would feel obligated to eat in its entirety! And so the process began...the bottom is filled with cream cheese icing and chocolate ganache, while the camera is filled with cream cheese and salted caramel. Dowels were used for supports (and the legs!), while a cardboard base is all that sat between the legs and the body of the camera (which was a bit sketchy when it came time to deliver...but have no fear! The birthday girl was able to see the finished product without any major catastrophes occurring during transport.) Fondant was used to cover the cake and to create the details, and a clean, damp towel and rolling pin are the tools I used to create the "leather" look on the camera, which unfortunately didn't come through in the photos--but it worked perfectly! I made a few alterations to personalize the cake for the recipient, such as pink nails, socks, and blouse sleeves, but aimed to maintain the overall whimsy of the design. Overall, the cake took around 5-6 hours total to complete (including baking) with an overnight stint in the cooler, and took only minutes to demolish and devour it! :)
