Description
This is my first year entering. I have always wanted to enter but then do not find the time. I made time this year and when I saw these cute penguins I knew this was the design I wanted to create out of cake. I make everything from scratch.
I started off making all of my marshmallow fondant on Day 1, I like to let it rest for a full day before I use it for molding and covering my cakes so the sugar completely dissolves.
On Day 2 I started off the morning by preparing the chocolate devils food cake in my kitchen aid mixer. I baked it then let if cool for several hours. While I let the cake cool I prepared the buttercream icing, I use butter and Crisco with whipping cream so it is not as sweet as a typical icing. I then split the icing in 2 and made chocolate with 1 half.
I then molded the penguins with the marshmallow fondant, this took about 4hrs as I changed my mind after the first set of faces I made :). I then cut out the snowflakes.
Then I prepared the royal icing for the background snowflakes and to add more detail to the snow. After this I cut the cake and filled it with the chocolate buttercream, then dirty iced it with the vanilla buttercream, I then covered it with the marshmallow fondant.
Now that I had everything to decorate the cake I painted on blue pearl dust for the background, then I piped a few snowflakes and attached the marshmallow snowflakes, piped the buttercream snow and placed the penguins on the cakes then sprinkled shimmering sugar to make it sparkle. I finished the cake off with a white buttercream border.
Total time for this cake was about 7hours.
