JOB cake by Suzanna Dickson

Description

It's not unusual for me to invite seven friends round to my house to make cake. What is unusual is for a shaped cake to not go horribly wrong (I suppose with cake, if it's a disaster it's still a tasty disaster). This wasn't the only design we attempted but it was the only one we managed to complete in the many hours which passed before we collapsed in front of the box and ordered curry.

Stevie chose the design. She's a massive batman fan. The actual baking was pretty quick (25 minutes at 160C fan), using the same sponge recipe my family has been mixing up for years. This was where Alex found out just how anal I am about my recipe. What took longest was probably kneading the colour into the fondant (we gave up on the black eventually and Lauren just mixed some black glaze to spread on the base instead) and then convincing it to stick to the cake. Will began making the bat and Holly finished it off.

Then everyone had to leave and it was just me and Holly left to eat it the next morning. My brother's had some since, and by some I mean about half so it must be pretty good, despite there being so much colouring in the fondant that it's almost like eating a chemistry lab.

Two days later, I still can't get the blue out of my hands.
