Description
Zeus the Hipster. I used a chocolate skull mold to make a skull. I attached it to a pvc pipe and then to a flange which went on a 20 inch masonite board. I covered the skull using a thin layer of fondant. There after I used buttercream to model Zeus. I used some doll eyes for Zeus and artist wire to make his glasses. I baked a sheet cake and cut it into rectangle shapes. Stacked them and covered it in buttercream. After the initial crumb coat I went back and used another layer of buttercream to smooth the cake. Smoothening the final coat of icing on the cake and modeling Zeus was all done using my fingers. It is a little bit of a challenging situation when u have to model figures using buttercream. It is sticky and messy but the outcome is mind blowing..I used some shredded coconut and colored it using some blue food colouring and sprinked it around Zeus to show as if he is emerging from the sky. After all he is the God of Lightning..I spend alot of time sculpting faces to look like a person. So my faces go through many face lifts before I am satisfied by the way they look. Zeus underwent similar changes so u will see that initially I had his eyes embedded deep into his eye sockets. It was not bringing out his features so I pulled it apart and redid it by making his eyes stand out more. Finally I just had to turn Zeus to look like the T shirt print. I had not tried this technique before so took a little risk. Coloring a 3D art work in a monochromatic color is not easy. You can't just put a flat color on a figure. You have to work on it as if u are working on a monochromatic painting. Capturing the gradients, blending in the colors to get that realism to come through ur portrait. I was happy that I tried this technique for the very first time on Zeus and it sure did work. The same glasses I covered using black fondant. This result truly amazed me. I preferred the pure white image of Zeus so I chose him as my primary image but I did want to share with the judges how I transformed the primary image to look like the T - shirt print. Overall I enjoyed making Zeus and it did teach me alot of new techniques that I can apply to my sculptures from now on
