After deciding to submit one fun cake for each category, color flow icing was my choice for trying to copy this wonderful Threadless design. I’m not very good at this technique, but it looked like the perfect medium. It took me one long evening to make and several days for the icing to dry completely. And even though I got it off of the wax paper intact, of course it just had to crack a little when I placed it on top of the cake. Thank goodness it still looked fine for a picture!
The cake was made from a vanilla-flavored box mix and covered with my homemade buttercream icing tinted with green. Those took only a few hours to prep. Then a friend snapped some pictures while my hands were occupied trying to peel and hold the dried icing design (sorry for the blur – had to work quickly). Naturally, I cut and we shared a piece of cake immediately. The sugary flavors tasted great, especially the crackling color flow icing!
