Summer Voyage cake by Malissa Beaulieu

Description

To start off, I've grown up with an infatuation with all things classic outer space. With this image being such a cornerstone for that affinity I was extremely happy to see no one had done this design previously. Now I had been decorating cakes here and there for family and friends for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and similar events, but no project came up that really raised my eye brows. Along came The Threadless designs. The cake itself is a simple Betty Crocker mix and the fondant was a marshmallow fondant made at home. I wanted to do the cake green because I wanted to pay homage to the old myth that the moon was made of green cheese. Once the cake was baked, I sculpted the fondant onto the cake with my hands and once I achieved mountainous look of the moon, I hand painted the darker colors until it resembled the original art. The rocket pop was all colored fondant and the only non edible part of this design was just two toothpicks. One connecting the popsicle to the the rocket pop and another one connecting the rocket pop to the cake. I had such a blast doing this cake! It took me around 4 hours total to create and only 22 minutes for me to fill up on delicious cake and watch an episode of Futurama.
