Description
I have been wanting to enter Threadcakes for a while now but was always intimidated by the quality of the entries. When i stumbled across the design Papa Oso I knew I had finally found the right design for me. I love the vintage whimsy of the little girl and her bear celebrating a birthday together. Its an image that to me is full of love, fierceness and friendship.
The cake is 100% edible with on a central dowel support as non edible. I made my favourite Vanilla bean white cake, filled with coffee buttercream and white ganache so the inside echoed the vintage sepia tones of the outside.
Both figures where covered and sculpted from fondant - sculpting took a total of 6 hours, most of which was spent creating the individual hairs for the bears fur. Two more hours were spent hand painting them with edible art paint ad petal dust to get that vintage drawing feel. A tiny touch of pale pink and mint completed the design.
It was so hard to cut into the cake - it felt cruel to chop into the bear, but it was enjoyed for afternoon tea with some friends and their kids.
Ive been caking as a hobby for 4 years and love to play with cultured shapes and colour so this was a challenge that really pushed all my skills.
Thanks Threadcakes - can't wait to do it all again next year!
