Description
Bruce the Dragon by Draco is my second Threadcakes entry. I chose Bruce because I have been wanting to make a dragon cake and my husband wanted me to make him this cake for his birthday, so win win.
Bruce is over 20 inches tall. The armature/internal structure is made out of hardboard, threaded rods, aluminum tubing and plastic covered wire. Bruce’s body is made out of chocolate cake with salted caramel swiss buttercream filling. After carving Bruce’s body I coated him with white chocolate ganache. I let him chill while I sculpted Bruce’s head out of my homemade modeling chocolate. Then I attached Bruce’s head and neck to the body. BTW, the neck is made out of rice crispies and modeling chocolate. I let him chill again for a few hours. I covered his entire body with modeling chocolate. I just love this medium! My husband created a set of tools that I used for the scales. Pretty good tools I got. Back in the chiller he goes while I work on his tail. The tail is also made of rice crispies and modeling chocolate. Put the tail aside while I go back to work on Bruce’s body. To give it some depth and dimension, I painted tones and highlights using edible luster dust and gel colors. I chose not to airbrush this time. I used black fondant details for his hair and stripes. Covered the base with fondant and painted it with vodka and gel colors. Then I attached the tail to the body, finished the details and let him chill again. Lots of chilling! I made a background for presentation. Now he’s done. After shooting lots of photos, I called in my animation friends for a Bruce the Dragon cake party. So we partied, ate the cake and took more photos.
