Saturn-Go-Round cake by Katie Bidulock

Description

This cake took me most of the day and my kitchen was a huge mess by the time I finished. I started by making a "Lazy Daisy" white cake recipe, then dividing the batter into 6 bowls and adding food colouring. I then poured each bowl one on top of the other in a round cake pan to make the rainbow ring. After that baked, I mixed up a batch of chocolate cake, and divided it between a regular cookie sheet and another round cake pan. I pulled the cookie sheet batter out after 15 minutes or so, and used cookie cutters to make my astronauts. Once "chocolate saturn" was finished baking, I set it on a cutting board, cut the rainbow cake to fit on top, and set out the astronauts. From there I made a white chocolate icing for saturn and the astronauts (this part was the messiest!), and for the finishing touches, I added some food colouring to the left over icing and painted on the details using a toothpick. I then made a batch of fondant, which I brushed onto the rainbow ring, and voila! My husband and I each ate an astronaut and a piece of saturn for dessert. It tasted pretty good, though the icing and fondant were very sugary! This was fun but a lot of work...
