I will start with a confession.. This was my second threadcakes attempt. That doesn't sound like much of a confession, I know. The confession is that the first cake failed. Yes, I said it. It failed. You can laugh at my failure here http://littlebigcakes.blogspot.com/
Ok so onto attempt #2. This cake took two full(& I mean full) days. I went classic with this one and made a vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream icing, I also used marshmallow fondant. The only non-edible part of the cake was the wire that I wrapped the twizzler around for the balloon string, and a small dowel I stuck in the cactus. I didn't have to use the dowel because the cactus, or should I say cactus's, stood up straight just fine, but making 3 cakes I wanted to make sure they would hold up while in the process of waiting for the next cake.
What was that? 3 cakes? Yes, I made 3 cakes. So here is my little short story of this cactus meets balloon-impossible love.
Once upon a time cactus met balloon. They shared an emotionally close but, physically far away, long distance relationship. Then one day they decided to take things to the next level and become closer together, physically.. They got closer, and closer, and closer until.. POP. Cactus killed his dear balloon. So don't listen to those people who say long distance relationships don't work=)
Anyways, back to baking.. Instead of just making one cake, I really liked the idea of having 3 cakes describing the process of this "impossible love". I drew a picture (I cannot draw, at all!) of what I saw in my head, and tried to the best of my ability to create it in cake form. I made the "middle" cake first, just in case the other 2 didn't turn out right, this was the primary cake.
I used cake for the base/ground, rice krispie treats for the balloons and cactus's, and a "graham cracker wall"(graham crackers with melted white chocolate poured on top, left to dry overnight) for the background.
Did I mention I love rice krispie treats? Well I do. I will leave the batter, cake, icing and everything else behind, just give me the treats.
Soo to sum it all up.. Day 1: baking; marshmallow fondant, icing, rice krispie treats, graham cracker wall, and CAKE.
Day 2: decorating; balloons, cactus's, sandy deserts, blue skies, and black rainy skies.
To be honest, by the end of these two days I did not feel like taking a bite out of this cake. But I did it, as the rules demanded, and then left it on the kitchen counter top for the rest of my family to stick their forks in.
