Description
I really wanted to make as much of this cake as hand-made as possible, so I began the process by making my own doughnuts. After baking the layers for the cake I set them aside to cool, I heated sugar to the soft-crack stage and poured it out onto parchment paper, then quickly sprinkled rainbow jimmies on top. This was the most exciting part since I felt that a vertical spray of sprinkles would set my cake apart from others of the same entry and qualify it as a truly 3D cake. I colored fondant for the top of the cake and the sprinkler fixture, then decorated the donut. The ice-cream cone was the only store-bought item since the only cones I know how to make are sugar cones, but I filled the cone with extra batter and baked it so it was cake-filled and less fragile. The cone was topped with a swirl of white fondant and sprinkled as well. From start to finish, the process took about 8 hours. This cake served double-duty as a contest entry and as my brother's 18th birthday cake! The lemony deliciousness was enjoyed by all!
