Catburger cake by Katie Robinson

Description

I decided, with the help of my 1 year old daughter, to create Catburger. I used the cake as her 1st birthday cake. She liked the cute kittens and I liked the twisted sense of humor and it really came across in cake form. I kept the flavors simple. For the buns and tomato, I used a rich chocolate cake and a dense butter cake, with both white chocolate and bittersweet buttercream. I baked my cake in 1/2 sheet pans. I sculpted the kittens out of krispy treats and modeling chocolate. The buns, tomato, kittens, lettuce, napkin, and cheese are all covered or made from fondant. The mustard and ketchup are made of royal icing. The cake came out a lot larger than i had envisioned, but I was very pleased in the end. Making it on a larger scale allowed me to add more details. I used food gel paste and vodka to add accents and shadows.
I did the baking, carving, sculpting, and decorating pretty much in one long shift. I worked on it for about 28 hours, start to finnish. I had a deadline.... my daughter's birthday!!! It was a very delicious cake. I think in part because it was very fresh... The sad part is it felt like a dream. It's a good thing I have pictures!
Thanks for doing this. I had a great time and if time permits, I'd like to do another. It's addictive!
