Long Journey cake by Kayla Richardson

Description

This was my first Threadcake entry. I'm planning on making one other before the contest finishes. I decided on doing Long Journey because I thought it was a cool design and I thought it would challenge me. For this cake I used 4 9x13" sheets of vanilla pound cake, made from scratch. I used pound cake because it is easier to carve.

After stacking the cakes I carved out the shape I wanted the base to be and iced it with orange butter cream. After I covered it in fondant, the decorating began. It took me a couple try's to figure out the best way to create the waves. I made them by making strings of fondant and forming a bunch into a swirl. I thought the end result was rather effective. I then sculpted the boat, tentacles and clouds out of fondant.

Once I was finished sculpting, I began to paint. For the majority of the surface I used very watered down food coloring to create a water color effect. I watered down the food coloring for the boat much less. I made the sails, masts and the anchor out of gum paste so they would harden. After painting them and the cake I secured them on with royal icing. When everything was done I attached the chain and painted it. My main picture of the cake doesn't include the flag on the top of the middle. Thant is because it was dark once I put it on and I didn't get such good pictures. I'll add a close up of it in my other pictures.

In total, I would say this cake took me about 20 hours with baking ( Maybe a little more). It was a lot of fun and I'm really pleased with the result. I can't wain to start my next one. Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to do with all this extra cake!
