I came up with a few design ideas, but decided (insanely) to make three cakes. I went on vacation for a week and a half, came back and suddenly there were tons of amazing entries. Intimidated though I was, I decided to go ahead and enter.
Hopefully, what I lack in technically proficiency I'll make up for with cleverness. This design, like my others, is inspired by the original shirt design. So, it’s not the original design in cake (I didn’t feel like I could live up to the shirt designs). Originally, I planned to put the “I’m yummy” in the middle of subliminal like the shirt design. Then I got the idea to fill the letters with “I’m yummy!” instead. I figured fondant letters would be better than piping the phrase (since that would most definitely lead to major hand cramps).
I started on a Wednesday and finished on Sunday. Needless to say, I'm done baking cakes for a while. I used boxed cake mixes, icing and pre-made gumpaste (but no gumpaste for this cake). I did make my own vanilla fondant (and used eight pounds of powdered sugar). I made all the fondant on Wednesday since it has to rest for 12 hours and wrapped each batch up individually in plastic wrap. Then, Thursday night and early Friday morning I made all the cakes (11 boxes!). This was the last cake I put together, so I didn’t start carving and icing it until Saturday afternoon. I finished carving and icing the letters Saturday evening, then dyed the fondant royal blue and dusky blue. After that, I covered all the letters in dusky blue. Sunday morning I woke up, rolled out the royal blue fondant, cut out letters and began applying them to the cake by lightly brushing the back of each one with water. After several hours of work (and most of the HIMYM Season Two box set), I finished applying “I’m yummy!” to the letters. This cake is chocolate with white icing and vanilla fondant and is 100% edible. It was so long I had to take the final picture from a ladder so you can see the whole word. I only had a bite (after making it, I didn’t want any of it), but everyone at my sister’s workplace said it was delicious!
