Description
When I first heard about the contest I was so excited to do a Threadless design in cake! I took approxomately forever in choosing the design, spending hours on the site dreaming up designs. "Lemon Aid" was at the perfect intersection of cute, clever, and greusome.
I've been doing cake for about a year now and my formal training includes Flying By the Seat of My Pants, and Winging It.
I made a white cake with whipped buttercream frosting. Originally I had planned to do a two-layer cake(and made both 6" and 4" tiers), but this design ended up working out best on the larger tier. (The extra cake was delicious.) I frosted and filled the layers with buttercream and then covered it in fondant.
I made three shades of yellow fondant dots and arranged them geometrically on the cake base. The lemons were made of a medium yellow fondant. I hand sculpted them and then used a wooden skewer to pock them up. The arms and legs are wire, and are used to balance the lemon body and hold the stretcher. The inside of the cut lemon and the lemon juice spilled on the top of the cake is painted with food coloring.
My boyfriend Tristan made the stretcher and did a darn fine job of it. It really made the piece!
The cake came to the bar in celebration of our roller derby team being superior to a neighboring city's roller derby team in this weekend's bout. It tasted like victory.
