Bunnies cake by Lisa Walker

Description

First and foremost, this contest was made for me. Threadless tees and cakes, that's pretty much me.

This cake was really funny especially once it started to come to life. I love the shirt design... it's hilarious and it seemed like an interesting challenge. It took about 11 hours to complete, and it was yummy!!! I made a French vanilla cake, with buttercream icing and fondant.

I made each of the 16 bunnies and placed them on a tiered cake so they could all be seen. The hand coloured fondant features took a fair chunk of time. These included paws, ears with and without individual hair styles, eyes, mouths and tails(which are on each bunny, but are not so visible from the front... which you might have guessed). The biggest issue I had was icing the bunnies. They were in cake ball form and it was really tricky to avoid turning them into messy globs. Meanwhile each time I moved them they were instantly mucked up, and it was tough to ice them once they were on the cake. DRAMA!!!!! haha.

To make matters more interesting the bunnies wanted to either roll off the cake or lean over like a bunch of drunks, so I had to use my mad "toothpicking" skills to violently harness them to the cake. :D

Aside from the crazy looking bunnies, my favourite part is the carrot… I'm really proud of it. It's cute and cake filled!! I made grooves in the carrot to make it look like a more realistic cartoon carrot, then I hand shaded it with brown gel colouring.

This was my first two tiered cake, the first time I made cake balls, and it was also the first time I covered a cake in fondant. WOOO! My man, Andrew, provided moral support & lunch, and helped me shape the paws, and my best friend, Teri, did the photography for me. She was also my certified fondant & icing tester. I must also give credit to the head of my clean up crew, Bailey, my dog, who really appreciated the fragility of the cakeballs.

To fulfill the requirements of the contest we had the onerous task of eating the cake. IT WAS AWESOME!! With a whole lotta great company and loads of cake and ice cream, it was a great time! Can't wait to do it again!!!
