Living In Harmony cake by Dottie Taylor

Description

...it all started once upon a time when I first lain eyes upon this design...

And has ended in a cake! I actually wanted this design on a hoodie for a long time but unfortunately it was sold out and so when I saw this contest I knew I had to do this one. I'm an amateur cake decorator, but I've worked in bakeries and have gone to culinary school and have made many cakes for my friends and family to fuel my desire to one day make this my career. So, thanks for the opportunity for some more practice!

The cake was really fun to make, each side of the cake is opposing of the other side, as you can see in the pictures. I wanted to stick to the living in harmony theme, so the acoustic guitar is yellow cake with chocolate frosting and the electric guitar is chocolate cake with vanilla frosting so all eaters of the cake may live in harmony, haha. I cut each cake out after using icing to draw where I was going to cut, and then separately iced each one, covered them with white fondant and then placed them together so that I didn't get icing all over the fondant from the other side, I also pulled out my laptop and listened to some music so I could sing and dance along side making this bad boy.

I didn't really have any problems making the cake! I know that doesn't make this interesting, but, I did have a lot of prospectors and a lot of fun doing it, and even though I used a cake mix I still put my heart into it...for two whole days. Okay so I lied a little bit, the only "problem" I had was rolling out the black fondant strings to make the lines pop, but that's because it took forever and because I made it white with black lines, my hands were all purple-y afterward, haha. But it takes me back to my multi-colored apron days and it made me really happy.

Overall, everyone who ate the cake thought it was delicious, my uncle is the biggest cake eater I've ever met, so I teased him for days (from start to finish) before letting him have the first piece. He charged into it full speed, having never eaten fondant before, and ate two long pieces of both necks, and slobbered about the entire time doing it. He then took half of each base home and left everyone else just enough to make them smile. I love my uncle! :)
