Baron VonFunburger's Haunted Castle Cavalcade cake by Katie De Souza

Description

We had promised to make a cake for my youngest sister Beth's friend Catherine's birthday. The party was at the beach, so we decided that the kind of quirky burger joint-ness of this design would make the perfect cake for the occasion.

My sister Jessie baked the cakes and made the rice krispies while I was at work one day. That evening, we worked on it together, the next day, she did some detail work, then that evening I worked on the cakes myself, finishing it the next morning, just in time to send it off for the party.

We started by making six round 6-inch cakes, and 3 logs of rice krispies. Three of the cakes were covered in light brown fondant, to look like buns. One was covered in white fondant with a slit, for the Mummy Burger, and one was cut into a square, iced, and the sides were covered with yellow fondant, to make a box for the chicken nuggets. We sliced and shaped the rice krispies into chicken nuggets, and the hotdog bun, then covered them in fondant as well. I combined fondant and gum paste and coloured it pinky-brown for the hotdag. I used fondant to make the burgers, the lettuce, and the cheese on the different burgers. We painted on the faces with food colouring, and used royal icing for the ketchup, mustard, and mayo. I used gum paste in a muffin tin to make a little cup and filled it with red royal icing for sauce for the nuggets. Lastly, I arranged them all on a board, and wrote the title on the bottom. Ta-da!

We loaded it into the car, and Beth headed for the beach. As she was walking to meet her friends, including the birthday girl, she had lots of people coming up and asking about the cake and admiring it. People said things like, "Is that a cake!?!" and "Where'd you get that cake? It's like the best cake ever!" Catherine loved her cake, and the kids devoured it all (even the fondant-covered rice krispies!).
