Breaking The Sound of Music cake by Randi Dean

Description

We assembled our team of overly ambitious young ladies. We brainstormed and decided to come up with a cake that would allow us to play and experiment with all new things while being creative with our design. Fondant, white chocolate, sugar glass, a tiered cake (topsy turvy). All of it was new. Let's just say that we made 3 to 4 times more things than actually appear on the cake.

After almost 5 full days of ridiculousness, 6 cakes, smoke filled kitchens, multiple clean up sessions just to see our work station, and breaks to dance to our favorite music, we finally succeeded in Breaking the Sound of Music.

Now about the cake: This is a three layer topsy turvy (mad hatter) cake. The bottom layer is pound cake and the top two layers are yellow cake. We did not have topsy turvy pans so we had to cut the cakes into their shapes. The instruments are made from sugar glass that were poured into molds that we made. The ball on top of the cake was also made from sugar glass that we blew into a ball. The sheet music and piano were made from white chocolate with piped icing. The word Threadless and the musical notes were hand cut from fondant.

Our design is an interpretation of music being unable to be restrained by sheets of music, pianos or cakes alike!
