Description
I will drive 500 miles, and I will drive 500 more
Just to be the girl who drove 1000 miles
To bake a Threadcake with my aunt.
DA DAT DA...etc.
I decided the best thing to do for this contest would be to go on a Cake Vacation at my aunt's. I love Threadless, and she's pretty boss at building cakes, so it seemed like the perfect combination. Plus, the mileage issue obviously made for a great song.
Before I made the drive from MI to MD, I drew up about 40 cake designs. But when last weeks t's came out, I fell in love with the idea of the graffiti design, and it became the obvious best choice.
The cake is Strawberry Supreme flavor, we used vanilla and chocolate buttercream icings, and I used paste food colorings thinned with vodka to paint the main graffiti pieces on slabs of fondant. That was the first time I've ever done that kind of painting or using fondant at all, so I'm pretty happy with myself. Surprisingly, I like how the fondant art pieces came out better than the simple piped frosting graffiti. Also, I fashioned little spraycans out of fondant to accessorize.
I made sure not to copy any graffiti directly. I remember a Threadless tee fiasco that came about due to that sort of plagiarism. Most designs are my own work, two are altered significantly. I now have a major appreciation for graffiti artists. Their stuff is amazing, and I don't think the majority of people get to fully appreciate the art often enough. Yay!
In a peculiar turn of events, there was a major t-storm between the completion of the cake (just in time) and the submission of the entry. In short, a tree right outside was blasted with lightning, causing the bark to EXPLODE to the max. Power was out, wireless internet was out (I'm at Panera submitting the entry as we speak), we were cut off from the world completely. Our survival would have been jeopardized...FORTUNATELY, we had delicious Threadcake to make it through the night! (Also we had a glow-stick party, but that's another story.)
I'll go out on a limb and say that if we hadn't participated in this contest, we'd probably be dead now.
