Amazon Addiction cake by Sofia Eydelman

Description

The shape of this cake was designed by taking each one of the 2D tetris shapes, making them 3D and creating an interesting 3D structure out of the pieces. Take a look at the pictures carefully, it's legal. The king ant is sitting proud on top of his structure (inspired by Amazon Addiction).

The process was definitely a learning experience. I started with a sponge cake which quickly failed when I realized that it was too light and fluffy to support the structure I wanted. I made a pound cake instead, which cut perfectly when frozen and was sturdy enough to keep shape when defrosted. There is nothing inside the cake for support, it stands on its own!
Then I went through two different iterations of fondant. My first attempt was to cut out squares and place them on black(-ish) icing to create a blocky look, but I didn't like the outcome and placed another layer of fondant without the icing showing on top...much better :)
I made the ant out of fondant as well.

The cake didn't taste very good as I used shortening instead of butter (it's cheaper and holds better at room temperature) so it had little flavour aside from the sugar, but it was definitely sweet and cakey, enough for many mid process finger and bowl lickings!
