Search and Rescue cake by sara gervey

Description

for my 2nd entry into the contest, i picked the "search & rescue" design because i thought it was cute and clever! this time i thought i would forgo the fondant route and bring it back old skool with the good old wilton piping business!

first i made the boxed pound cake mix 3 times to make the 3 layers of the cake. i only have 1 9" round pan so picture that image x3. the first layer i covered with store-bought betty crocker coconut pecan filling/frosting which was quite tasty! i then cut cake #2 even across the top and covered it with more betty crocker and replaced the piece i cut and then leveled that to be straight so i'd have an even ground for maze. i then made an easy decorator's icing from confectioner's sugar, shortening, vanilla extract, and water, and tinted it a woodsy green using wilton icing colors in leaf green, moss green and just little black. i then crumb-coated the cake.

while the icing firmed up in the refridgerator, i started to make the giraffe out of store-bought gum paste that i tinted an orange-yellow color. then i tinted a little bit of gum paste red to make the wee bird. next i made all the bunnies. i let the menagerie harden for about 3 days just to play it safe(after my leprous gnome debacle from my 1st entry!).

back to the cake... next i busted out the grass tip and piped the top of the cake. then i used a leaf tip and piped the entire outside of the cake. then for the maze pieces, i made a template on a piece of paper and carved out cake #3. i stuck the maze pieces on the cake and covered them with the green icing before piping them with the leaf tip as well.

ok by this time all the gum paste critters were firmed up nicely. i used rolled out brown fondant that i cut into the giraffe pattern and applied them with water as a glue. i had some leftover red gum paste from making the bird so i rolled that out to make the rescue blanket for the giraffe's back. i gave him white gum paste eyes that i used black edible food marker to make the pupils for and also for his nostrils. i attached the ears to all the bunnies and added faces with the food marker. i then paused to giggle at how cute they were coming out! :) next the bird got his beak from a scrap of gum paste left from the giraffe. then i piped his headset on with white icing using a wilton #1 plain tip. i also used this to write "search" on the back and "rescue" on the front of the giraffe's blanket. then i positioned the lost bunnies and giraffe in the maze. i attached his 2 rescued bunnies on his back with a little piece of soft gum paste and water. same with the bird, except he needed a little toothpick for some extra support.

then my assistant and i cut into the cake and thoroughly enjoyed the layers of cakey goodness! well done!
