Description
I searched through the t-shirt designs and thought that this one would translate into a really cute cake. It also reminded me of a favorite pixar short. I made 2 chocolate and 2 yellow layers, to go with my icing colors. I used chocolate and vanilla icing between the layers too. It was my first time rolling out fondant to cover a cake in many years. I cut out the city-scape by hand from black rolled fondant and attached it to the lower tier. I then covered the top tier with yellow flower cut-outs over the black base-covering. I used white fondant to create the birds and the bat. I painted them with royal blue and turquoise food coloring, and used yellow edible markers to color in the beaks and eyes.
I'm grateful that Hall of Fame Sugar Artist Kerry Vincent isn't judging the neatness of our workspace as part of this contest. My goal was just to get the fondant pieces on the cake, as opposed how much of the confectioners sugar got on me in the process. Same thing when painting the birds and the bats. Just as much food coloring got on my hands as it did those pieces. It was still alot of fun. If only I had enough time for a 3rd cake.
