Afternoon Delight cake by Kim Beitzel

Description

About five minutes after telling some people that I wanted to enter this contest, my friend Jess declared --nay, dared-- that I make an Afternoon Delight cake. And while I was hesitant to submit the end result (as it didn't quite meet my personal expectations), I do so knowing that everyone else got a kick out of it.

Specifics:

Bottom cake - boxed devil's food with applesauce-for-oil substitution
Top cake - boxed angel food
Top cake platform - chocolate covered graham crackers (two layers)
Top cake supports - Twix logs cut to size
Frosting - basic butter cream
Rainbows and unicorns - fondant

The cakes and frosting were made one day, decorating the next, consumption the next. Angel food in a non-angel-food pan makes for slightly lopsided cooling. Frosting a cake in the unairconditioned summer afternoon does not make for a delight. Everything is edible, though, and chocolate covered graham crackers are quite tasty.

Thanks to Jess, Jon, Jess, Clay, Julie, and Dan for eating pizza(! pizza!) and cake and creating the Afternoon Delight balloon animal diorama on my shelf.
