Training cake by Michelle LaRock

Description

So after looking through last years entries I began looking at the archives on Threadless. I wanted to pick a design that hadn't been done before. I happen to have a love for anything cute and evil. So when I saw this design I knew it was the one.

I had only attempted a fondant cake once before. It was only two layers and I attempted to make The Luggage (a character from Terry Prachett's Discworld novels.) I did this with a boxed cake and quickly realized that if I ever did this again I would need to use better and denser cake.

So with the help of my husband I made three rectangular brown sugar pound cakes. I just used a standard butter cream recipe for the filling. And then I got to making homemade marshmallow fondant. Always a messy and sticky proposition.

I stacked and carved the cakes for the baby Godzilla. Crumb coated and covered it in fondant. I think my least favorite part is trying to color that much fondant at once. The tail and legs are pretty much pure fondant. I had enough to go around.

The little toy dino was made from sugar paste mainly but everything else is fondant.

I have to say finishing this cake was quite a challenge. The temperatures here are normally in the 80s during the summer. It spiked to over 100 degrees for many days. Trying to work fondant when it practically melts on the counter was an interesting challenge for my second ever fondant attempt.

Of course I am still learning and there are a lot of things I would do differently a second time around.. like find someplace with air conditioning!
