Tools Of The Trade cake by Danielle Lamoureaux

Description

I found this contest by chance and immediately started browsing through the tee-shirts to find which would become my design. In the end I chose "Tools of the Trade," and planned that I would make a large round cake and have the art tools coming out from the center with their corresponding splatter marks around the edge of the cake.
Day one consisted only of baking. I did not have a 13" cake pan, so I used two 9x13" cakes - one chocolate fudge and one vanilla - and then sculpted them into one round. I wanted the cake to be slightly taller than my final product of baking, so I used a Rice Krispie base to achieve that.
Day two was frosting the cakes and rolling fondant. I wanted a clean white cake which could be considered the canvas. I did not have any problems with the fondant and the cake was coming together as planned.
The final day three was the most time consuming, and consisted of making the pens and their splatter marks. It was my first time using fondant to make smaller pieces. The three biggest markers have a Rice Krispie center.
As soon as I finished the cake I brought it to my work where half of it was gone in minutes. They and the customers had a good time looking at the art tools and the contest itself. Overall I am happy with how the final product turned out, and definitely want to improve on my techniques as well as learn some new ones and enter again another time!
