Anthill Trap cake by Anna Ivanova

Description

I absolutely love this t-shirt design so it was an obvious choice to bring to life as a cake!
I used a chocolate cake recipe with added tiny chocolate chips for extra texture as the earth, chocolate frosting to hold the layers together, and yellow butter cake to make the anteater. The grass and flowers are made out of fondant and the welcome sign is gumpaste. I'd originally planned to make the ants out of gumpaste as well, but an impromptu berry picking excursion left me with literally a bucket of blackcurrants, so I used the delicious berries for ant bodies as well as the anteater's eye. Aside from the toothpick holding the sign, everything in/on the cake is edible and yummy!
In total I probably spent about two days on the cake. The fondant by far was the hardest part since I opted to make it from scratch and ended up with a very sticky disaster before I got it to the right consistency!
