Description
I was incredibly excited when I found out about this contest through cakewrecks.com (thanks, Jen!) and promptly recruited my good friend Tricia to create what we hoped would be a masterpiece. Neither of us had sculpted cake or worked with fondant before, so it was quite an experience! For our first foray into cake baking as an art, we're quite proud of the results.
There were too many designs to choose from, so we narrowed it down to the 22 threadless shirts that I actually owned, and chose "Pillow Fight" because it seemed feasible yet challenging.
We chose a 7-egg pound cake recipe we found online because it was purportedly easy to carve, and baked three sheets. We stacked those, with home-made cream cheese frosting in between, and frosted the outside after carving. Carving the front was a bit difficult because I had problems visualizing it and had to add cake here and there (with generous helpings of frosting). Working with the fondant was fun and frustrating in equal amounts. We had particular difficulty smoothing it out over the Rice Krispie treats we used for the top pillows/figures.
It took us a total of 7 days from start to finish because of scheduling problems, and we were worried it wouldn't taste good after all that, but our friends assured us otherwise. Our impromptu cake party was a success, despite chewy fondant (definitely making our own next time!), and regardless of whether we win anything, we had fun, so thanks for the challenge!
