Nosferatu cake by Jennifer Andries

Description

K, so, this is my cake. It took me about 4 days to complete it (I had to work on it in the evenings, after getting off work). It's 6 layers of cake, 3 tiers (6", 8", and 10"). I used a yellow cake mix (3 boxes), boxed fondant, and regular store-bought decorating icing.

After icing the tiers (in black), I assembled the cake, then put fondant (tinted sky blue) on the tiers. After putting a panel of fondant on each tier, I used a toothpick to sketch out where everything was going to go (the angry mob, the wall edges, the damsel-in-distress, etc). With the tiniest piping tip I have, I added the moon and the stars. To do the hazy white sky, I put white icing onto the fondant, then used a toothpick to spread it out thinly. After it looked about right, I used the tip of the toothpick to draw the castle, trees, and bats (removing the icing from these spots, making the shapes with the negative space). To do the silhouettes, I used the same tiny piping tip, and just drew them out, then I used a toothpick to smooth out the bumps. To cover the edges between the tiers, I rolled up some extra blue fondant I had (roughly into stone shapes), placed them around the cake, and outlined them in black.

The cake was really good, but the black icing made our mouths look pretty gross haha :o)
