Guess Who cake by lucirene Pina

Description

I decided to try to make the Guess Who graphic. This was a weekend project. Friday butter was creamed, egg whites were folded, the cakes were baked; the frosting and rice crispy treats were made. Saturday all the carving, sculpting, airbrushing and painting was done. Finally on Sunday the whole thing was set up. I made my mom's vanilla butter pound cake and frosted it with home made lemon meringue butter cream. It was all covered with either vanilla, or chocolate fondant.

I was lucky enough to have help in the painting and sculpting from my friend Stacy, Megan helped take the most of the pictures and my friends Janet and Pete came on Sunday to put the last touches and more importantly eat the cake!

We sculpted the boy, the armchair and the plant pot using the cereal treats. The cactus, books, guess who?, scythe and lamp were molded out of fondant.(yes I know, there is no lamp on the cake... it broke when I lifted it, hence no lamp) The grim reaper was made up of 3 tiers of cake. There were approximately 5 pieces of wooden dowels used to stack the tiers and 2 cake boards. The sign, cactus and scythe each had a small piece of bamboo skewer attaching them to the other pieces. The chair got another 3 to stabilize the arms and back. The boy had one skewer attaching his head to his torso and 1 attaching each leg. The chair legs were actually made out of cinnamon sticks that I stained with diluted food coloring gel.

On Sunday it all came together as everything was placed on top of a cake board that I had covered with bright blue fondant... and then we ate it! This was a lot of work, my first cake of this kind, but a really great time. My friends have enjoyed my cakes before, but this was the first time being involved in the process and we all had fun with it.
