Description
I created this cake as a multi-layered cake covered in fondant. I started off with a regular white cake, which i then carved and cut, layering with a lemon filling to create the television shape. instead of a perfect square television i did a slanted back to similar to the old fashioned tube tvs. my original plan was to colour the cake batter to be rainbow, so it would appear that when you cut it the rainbow was leaking from within rather than the screen, but oops... i went and baked the cakes plain forgetting. in the end i think it may have been a bit much anyways so it was all for the best. after carving out the shape i covered the cake in a thin layer of icing to serve as a base for my fondant. i then set to work colouring my fondant black, which was a lot of work haha. it took a ridiculous amount of colouring, and purple dyed hands to finally reach my goal. it looked better then expected though. i had never worked with fondant before so i ran into a few obstacle while trying to cover my cake. First of all, i didn't make enough, so i made up a new batch to add. then i ran into problems trying to roll it out onto the cake, which i quickly solved. i couldn't get the fondant as smooth as i had hoped, partly due to how i had carved the cake. i ended up with a few bumps and lumps, to my disappointment. after the fondant was all smoothed out to the best of my ability i started to make the screen. i coloured strips of fondant and attached them to the front, making up the colour bars. i also created some drips at the bottom. the most fun part was definitely making the puddle around the base. i created ribbons of fondant and draped and looped them overtop of each other to look like a swirly puddle. instead of colouring the fondant ahead of time, i created it in white and painted the colour on. this way, it looked more liquid. i mixed a variety of colours and was very happy with how it turned out. i had alot of fun making this cake! it didnt turn out as perfect as i had invisioned, but for my first attempt at a 3D cake i'm pretty happy.
