Description
Good lord this took forever. I spent a few hours here and there for two weeks. Pillow fight is one of my favorite shirts so I decided this to be my muse. For the cake, I just used the Lightning Cake recipe from Joy of Cooking (hey, this is a decorating contest, not a baking contest). I didn't have two 8 inch pans so I only made one level and ate the rest of the batter. Mmmmmmm..... (ok, not ALL of it)
I started with trying to make pure fondant pillows but that was a butt load of fondant, so I baked a second cake and used that as my insides. I froze it a bit then cut and shave them into pillow shapes. I'm an engineer, so I used the same measurements for each: 2.50'' x 1.25'' x 1. The shaving was a arduous. I then let them freeze again so they wouldn't be soft wrapped them in fondant pinching the corners for that sheet effect and let them sit to harden (and I needed a break).
Fondant coloring was pretty straight-forward. Cut off some for white, added some blue, got a color I wanted, cut off a piece, added more blue and some violet, etc until I had all the colors I wanted.
The details were the hardest to do. A lot of rolling and cutting with a razor blade. Next time I'll look into gum paste or something. I used some simple syrup to aid in the sticking process and gave it some time to dry. After that I rolled and placed a cake cover, added the the pillows and secured it all with two wood skewers (everything stayed in place until the two fighters). After everything looked good I went back and shortened the skewers a bit and voila!
