Eclipse! cake by Meg Harlan

Description

I heard about this contest because I am a huge fan of threadless T-shirts (I own about 10!) and asked by neighbor/baking buddy if she wanted to make a cake for the contest with me.
We started out by picking a design and going shopping for a cartful of sweets including 9 lbs of sugar, 3 lbs of marshmallows and various other baking supplies.
On day 1 we got started by baking the cakes and making our own fondant out of sugar and marshmallows.
Starting early on day 2, we first made some buttercream frosting. We then assembled and covered the cakes with frosting and fondant. Next we made the rice crispy treats and poured the white chocolate for the sun's crown. Finally we molded the hands and feet out of rice crispy treats and covered them in fondant.
On day 3 we jumped right in designing and piping the figures. then we assembled each planet and put it all together.
This being our first real experience decorating with fondant, we improvised many techniques (blow torches, water guns, etc.) and we are thrilled (and maybe a bit surprised) with the results.
The design is especially relevant and special because of the total solar eclipse of the sun (july 22) visible to parts of south east asia!
