Eat Shirt and Die cake by Gayathri Marasinghe

Description

This is my second threadcakes entry. I picked this design because I liked the color and thought it'd be challenging (and it certainly was!) For my first entry, I ran into some issues because I didn't have a mixer (I just moved to a new state and some supplies have still not arrived). I stood in the grocery aisle for a long time looking over all the cake mixes but I just couldn't get myself to buy one. So for cake, I made a simple and delicious chocolate cake recipe that required a simple mix and stir method (no meringues or creaming method needed!). The cake, unlike me, also happens to be vegan. It was delicious but ultimately a little hard to work with because it was so soft! For frosting I made a chocolate ganache with butter, chocolate, cream and sugar which was also really tasty (and not vegan!).

I basically made two stacked cakes. One for the bottom base which was 2 layers (8") and a three layer cake for the monster's head (6"). I should have added one more layer onto that bottom base I think for more stability but oh well. I did a bit of carving for the head which surprisingly held up considering the softness of the cake. I made marshmallow fondant (this time it turned out a lot better than the first time I made it) which I used to cover the cakes. I used gum paste for the teeth and fondant for his gums. The funnest part was modeling the head. It really came to life then. The arms of the monster were the hardest part. They are actually the support dowels I used to hold up the head cake covered in rice krispie treats (which I had never attempted before) and then covered in marshmallow fondant. It was certainly tricky doing the finishing touches because I was super worried the whole thing would collapse! But amazingly it stood up fine until my boyfriend and I got to cut into it and enjoy it! Another fun project! Thanks threadcakes. And thanks Andrew Bell for the rad design.
