Clean Monster cake by Tracy VanTilburg

Description

A friend told me I should enter, so here we are. ;)

My first attempt was initially done with a fancy pound cake recipe, but the fondant didn't turn out right and my dog ate the cake, so I gave up for a couple weeks. ;) This time around, I made a Duncan Hines double fudge chocolate box mix for the cake. The icing is buttercream and the fondant is marshmallow fondant. There is an amazing amount of sugar in this cake. I think 5 pounds of it. LOL

I'd never worked with fondant before, so this was a learning experience and a lot of fun. I used a 9x13 pan for the cake, covered it with icing then rolled out the fondant I'd tinted gray. Once the edges were trimmed, I painted the fondant with black gel food coloring watered down with vanilla extract. I'd never done anything like that before and thought it looked pretty snazzy. LOL :)

I then printed out a couple copies of the image and cut them into templates so I could cut the city out of the fondant in layers. Once the layers were cut out and assembled, I centered them on the cake. They were powdered sugar-y, so I painted them with vanilla extract. That helped keep the layers from sliding. I painted the edges of the city black and painted details on the monster.

While that was drying, I sculpted the sponge, spray bottle and arms from more fondant. The window details on the buildings are a mixture of powdered sugar and vanilla dyed with gel food coloring. I drew each of them on with a toothpick.

That was pretty much the end of the work. I took a few pictures, but they were really shiny. I lightly went over the shine with a brush dipped in powered sugar, but it didn't help. The next morning, however, the vanilla was completely dry and back to being matte. I took some more pictures and then my brother, husband and I all had a piece. It was quite yummy. I'm sure the amazing amounts of vanilla had something to do with that. ;) All in all, I think it took about an hour make/bake time and 6 hours to decorate.

Thanks for having this contest! It was a lot of fun. :)
