Description
One of my Dallas Cake Club buddies introduced the threadcakes contest at our last meeting so I thought ‘what the heck’. Thanks, Kristy – what a hoot!
So I checked out the shirts and found about a dozen that I thought would be fun. Then I called in my best critic, coach and designer - my almost 8 year old daughter, Kate. She liked the ‘bunnies’ and quickly drew up ‘her vision’ for the cake. Since she has much more faith in my decorating capabilities than I do (and her designs typically defy gravity), the result you see here is my re-engineered design. Thanks, Kitty Kat for the encouragement.
I started with a new cake recipe (Almond). I figured since I was taking it to work for my buddies to eat, why not try a new recipe (If you can’t experiment on your family and pals, what good are they? THANKS, guys, for willing participation in the tasting). They baked up moist and very level (for a scratch recipe), but they were a little thin, so I planned a 4 layer cake to support my design. The chocolate cream cheese butter cream is a standby in my recipe book.
The bunnies gave me a little trouble – I re-made the first one 3 times before I was happy with the look. They kept looking like pot-bellied, long-eared mice. The stars are on spaghetti. A big thanks goes to Duff, here, for his graffiti paint – I won’t be trying to use luster dust on pasta again – yep, I just drank the gin you see in the picture.
I learn something new every time I roll out fondant, but I finally got the cake covered (did you notice that beer in the picture?) and ready to decorate. I tried an old paint splatter technique on the top (using a toothbrush) to make the start within the stars. I found a quote that I though fit with the shirt design and hand lettered it with a food safe pen. There are fondant balls for a border and I highlighted everything with silver luster dust. The bunnies went on next. The last thing I did was put my shooting starts on the top.
The cake made the commute to work in one piece and everyone finished the work day with a little sugar buzz!
