Playin' In The Sprinkler cake by Alice Bailey

Description

Well I got sent a link from my sister in-law saying "you should enter, I think I might too." I had heard about Threadless and seen a few Designs around, but little did I know that there were SO many to choose from, so one of the hardest parts was choosing one of your fab designs and then to recreate!

I found Playin' in the Sprinkler! It just looked so happy it made me smile, and what's a better way than to have it as an oh so delicious cake.

I knew it had to be chocolate cake so I started by making a chocolate gnash so it had time to cool.
So a baking I went, making a giant chocolate 35cm/25cm cake and a wee round cake for the donut, making a mess as usual! Once they were cooking I set about making a coffee butter-cream filling mmmm, and colouring all the fondant icing for covering and decorating, my hands are still looking a bit colorful 3 days later!

I made the basic shape for the background layering they cakes with filling, then I covered the whole thing with gnash mmm it looked good and I put in some skewers to keep it steady. BUT TRAGEDY STRUCK..... the cake wasn't as cool as I had thought so the filling softened, the cake was crushed under the pressure and the great cake collapse took place!!
I should have waited a day or frozen the cake as they were too fresh so they were not as strong as I'd hoped, but I marched on.

I cut out the bottom of the collapse, took out all the skewers and tidied up the the shape to make a nice graduated curve, which I think looked better than the first and skewer free! I covered the cake with gnash and let it harden in the fridge for 45mins. I then smoothed it with a hot knife to make a nice base for covering, which I did so with dark blue-black fondant.

I cut the shapes of our sweet friends Ice cream cone and Donut, covered in gnash, smoothed then covered in fondant...and now was my favorite part....DETAILS =)

I shaped the cone then cut in a mesh pattern, I rolled out the donuts icing and slapped that on, it looked like a real one. To attach them to the background I put in two skewers for the ice cream, one for the cone which I pushed on and one for the ice cream, I made that out of fondant in a delicious looking way. Then I put one in for the donut and they were secure.
I decorated their faces and details, then I made arms and legs on wire, let them set and made the sprinkler and hose.

I put on all the limbs wet my brush and brushed over the background, donut and ice cream then I turned on the sprinkler, oh how I smiled to see their happy faces and bright colours.

I gave the cake to a friend for her birthday, I was all ready with my camera to take pics of the cutting and eating, but unfortunately she went to bed early for she partied too hard too fast! she did however have this to say the next day " Thank you so much Ali, my cake was so awesome and it tasted soooo goood, I can't stop eating it"
I did taste the cake as we got to munch on the collapsed part and it was moist, coffee, chocolaty goodness.

It was fun to make and put a big smile on mine and many others faces.
Thanks for the great comp and I may make another=)
