Royal Wave cake by Yoanita Lestari

Description

This is my first time joined a cake competition and also my first time decorate a big complicated cake ever. Well, hmm, I usually only work on small surface such as cupcakes, so decorated a whole cake with fondant was a really huge thing for me hehehe so here goes nothing…
I’ve been looking through the threadless design and instantly fell in love with the Royal Wave. Not sure because of the funny concept or it just got a little bit Alice in Wonderland thingy ;p
I was focusing on the little details before start baking the cake; the king and queen, the sun and moon, the wave, etc. The cake is simple chocolate cake with boxed whipped cream and lots of icing sugar (which I hope have the same consistency with royal icing) and covered with fondant. It took me almost 3 days and nights. My back were screaming. But I was too excited and told myself to hang on :)
I thought I can give some depth by making the cake looked like a skateboard ramp. Then come the biggest threat hahaha covering all of them with fondant and… I couldn’t do it hahaha so I had to cover the cake 4 times with small cut of fondant. No worries, all the details will covered all the extension. I went and had some rest so the next morning I could have all the fun to decorated them.
But the heat and gravity said something else. (A little info, I live on tropical country. Sometimes the air conditioner s can’t help to cool down the temperature). My cake was wrinkling! It was a disaster!!! I almost gave up, I didn’t have the strength to bake another cake because I didn’t have any more time. Then my mum said something funny, “it’s okay, it gives the cake some texture and wavy feeling” hahaha don’t you love your mum? They always find something nice to say and cheer you up. Thanx mum ?
“POWER UP!!!”
I spent the last day to put all the details together. The fondant were start to falling apart so I had to be quick. Zap! Zap! Zap! Took the picture. Click! Click! Click! Cut the cake. Oh boy, how am I so relieved after I cut the cake hahaha I did my best. I had fun decorating the cake. And the little children around my neighborhood also had fun eating them up. Hope I’ll be better next time ;)
