Search and Rescue cake by Jacqueline Ngo

Description

This is my very first online cake contest and it was such a fun experience! I spent about 5 hours on this cakes with some breaks, especially from all that piping I had to give my hand a breather. I made vanilla and chocolate cake batter and swirled it together in the 1/4 sheet pan to make a marble fudge like cake. I used a sharp knife to carve out the maze once the cake was completely cook. I then make basic buttercream and colored it green for the grass. I first tried to cover the maze cake with the buttercream, but the cake was soft and so it was really hard to keep the cake's form while spreading the buttercream ontop of it, so just piped on grass on the whole thing. Can you say hand cramp??? Totally worth it though, I was pleased it came out looking like an actual hedge maze!

I then made rice krispies from scratch, to form the giraffe. I used a dowel to keep the long neck up. I think covered the giraffe in buttercream and covered it in fondant. The birds and bunnies are also made out of fondant! The tricky part was to make the giraffe proportional to the maze and the image on the shirt design, but I think I managed ok!

The cake and rice krispies tasted delicious and I also made this cake for my friend's birthday! He's a really tall person so I know he can relate to this cake! I feel like a cake is always worth more the while when it's for a purpose, like birthdays, plus it's an excuse to eat cake as well! So there you have it, my first entry! I hope you all find it aMAZE-ing! =)
