This was the threadcakes entry that almost didn't make it! I took an entire day modeling all the critters in their cars out of a combination of modeling chocolate & fondant, which you'll see progress pix of in the gallery. While I was working on them, I kept them in the fridge so that they would set up a little quicker, and since they seemed to be holding ok in the fridge, and it we were in the middle of a heat wave, I decided to let them sleep in the fridge overnight. BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER!
The next morning, when I came to assemble the cake and put all the lil' guys on the cake mountain, I opened the fridge and there was MASSIVE amounts of condensation on all the critters & their cars. Trying not to completely freak out, I took them all out of the fridge and put them in front of a fan on high and kept tending to them with Qtip & tissue blotting off what moisture I could without destroying them too much. It took about 3+ hours for the critters to get to a point where I could actually place them on the cake. There was some damage here and there, and some eyes, noses, etc. needed to be redone, but all in all, I think it still came out ok.
Lesson learned though - I definitely can't keep any figurines in my fridge overnight!
I used a combination of different flavored cakes & buttercreams in this piece: red velvet & yellow butter cake and vanilla & nutella buttercream. The mountain was covered in fondant that was airbrushed green & all the critters & their cars were made of modeling chocolate and fondant. I found that using a food grade marker for the small eyes worked out well, especially when I had to "touch" up the critters after their overnight fridge shower.
