The Cheshire cake by Diana Li

Description

I admit--I am a bit obsessed with Alice in Wonderland. The moment I saw The Cheshire in the Threadless Newsletter, I knew I *had* to get that shirt. It was so true and characteristic of the Cheshire cat--the appearing and disappearing of the UV-ink body, the glowing eyes and smile in the dark--all on a simple white shirt. It heralded basically three shirts in one!
I was completely enthralled by the huuuuge smile and the special inks that the shirt needed.
Upon learning of the Threadcakes contest, I knew I had to create a cake that did justice to The Cheshire. I decided on a half-and-half cake: one half with the blue and periwinkle stripes like the UV-activated ink; the other half all black as if the shirt is in the dark to show the glowing eyes and smile.
The whole process was spread out into four evenings because of my (somewhat) crazy schedule. I used three cakes, fondant, icing, edible spray paint, and a few sprinkles for the pink nose (and I had a lot of help from my parents). Miraculously, the cake and fondant still tasted quite flavorful and nice four days later when we ate it! I had a lot of fun with this project. Thank you for such inspirational shirts, Threadless!
