Historic Fail!

This is my first Threadcakes entry. I think this design is cute and funny, especially the smug expression of the odd one out. I also thought it would be great to re-create this in 3D!

I started with two 11"X7" layers of a large batch of dense chocolatey Devil's Food Cake, six King-sized cupcakes (a giant, heavy pan!), and one small loaf. Then I made up a Cream Cheese/Peanut Butter Frosting to fill and initially ice the whole cake. The cupcakes and loaf were used to carve the pyramid structures; these were doweled with lollipop/bamboo skewers/popsicle sticks depending on size, and then were frosted (crumb coat). Then I used light brown fondant for the all pyramids. I went over the true pyramids with white fondant I had tinted with yellow gel icing color, keeping the odd one as is, darker than the rest. I piped dark chocolate decorating icing for the expressions. For the shadows on the sides, I first painted on melted dark chocolate onto the sides of the pyramid, then dusted with cocoa. For the shadows on the “ground,” I also used cocoa and Sugar in the Raw for a sandy texture. I next airbrushed all pyramids/cube with liquid yellow food coloring to make them truer to the design, and went in with piped chocolate decorator icing for the outlines. I originally wanted to do the camel in fondant but decided to instead paint a camel-shaped animal cracker with melted chocolate! For the sun, my plan was to melt white chocolate, use a round pie pan as a mold, and attach it to the back of the cake with icing. However, I ended up just using a cut round cake board that was already white and sturdy enough to support the back of the cake. I also ran out of white fondant to cover this board with. I must say the front two pyramids started out small when carved but then I put a layer of frosting and two layers of fondant, so that’s a little deviation. I also learned that because of all the fondant layering, it tends to get pretty heavy and the base/frosting need to be able to handle that.

I’m happy with the way it turned out. Mmm chocolate and peanut butter…
