Hedgehog Goes Rainbow cake by Kirsten Wright

Description

Looking through the list of available Threadless designs, I was struck by the Hedgehog Goes Rainbow design. I know someone who draws Australian echidnas in a similar style, and inflicts all sorts of humorous escapades on his echidnas! I was amused by the thought of doing the same to some hedgehogs. I felt that this design would translate best into a series of cupcakes, and decided to use the reverse buttercream transfer method for the actual designs.

To start with, I baked some vanilla cupcakes. While they were cooling, I started on the buttercream. I reversed the design images and used them as my stencils, doing all the outlines first. I then added colour, and added more buttercream to the backs of the designs to help anchor them, and left them in the freezer overnight.

The next day, I iced the cupcakes with more buttercream, carefully peeled the designs off the wax paper and flipped them onto the cupcakes. Then it was just a matter of taking photos of the finished product before the cupcakes were consumed!
