Sugar Land cake by Kim Rountree

Description

As soon as I came across the Sugar Land design, I knew I wanted to turn it into a cake. It was so much fun making all the little evil desserts and candies laying around, and painting that ice cream conductor guy was definitely the highlight of the project (so dastardly!). The cake began as a vanilla sheet cake which was cut into the correct size ( about 16 in X 16 in), dirty iced and then covered with a sheet of rolled out fondant. The gumpaste characters, bushes, road, bridge banner, rainbow and all the other fun stuff were cut out from paper templates printed from the design using an x-acto knife. The smaller candies, balloons and various limbs of the characters were sculpted freestyle, and the balloon strings and lollypop sticks were made from REALLLLY teeny strips of gumpaste. Royal icing mixed with food coloring was used to make all the “paint”, and each thing was hand painted using mini brushes, toothpicks and sometimes a needle. The scripty type on the banner was also painted with royal icing. When all the elements were dry and ready to go, I began placing them on the cake itself and slowly glued them on using royal icing. I also used more royal icing to fill in any gaps and add more texture to the road so it looked more integrated into the cake. And that’s about it! The hardest part about making this cake was the little hands and the little legs on the donut. I’m not really sure how long this took, its been about two weeks in the making, with about 3 hours per day and then 8 hours on the last day( putting it all together). Overall, it was a ton of fun, quite challenging, tedious and of course delicious! Enjoy!
