Fail cake by julie freund

Description

I got really excited when I saw the announcement for this contest on Cakewrecks- I really like to decorate cakes and haven't done one in ages as I moved to a different city and don't really know too many people. Also, I am currently laid off so I really need something to do:)

I decided to take the economical route with this one and used a boxed choclate mix, though I did add Creme de Menthe. I made three layers- 8", 6", amd 4". I picked "fail" right away because I just love those cows and as soon as I saw them I knew they'd look great in Chocolate. Fot the decorations I drew templates and reversed them. Then I covered the drawings with a sheet of waxed paper. I melted a bunch of white chocolate, tinted it different colors and started making the figures, starting with the smaller details and then going over it with a thick layer of the main color(which is why you need to remember to reverse the templates since you're working front to back). It probably took about 2 hours to make the figures. After you pipe them, you just need to wait for them to set up-15 to 30 min. depending on size, thickness, and room temp.

I packed up the cake layers and chocolate decorations the next day and headed to my parent's house for father's day; frosted and stacked the layers, placed the figures, and Voila! The only hitch was the 90+ degree weather that kept the icing runnier than usual, so it was harder to place the decorations than I had expected.
