Second threadcakes entry!
After doing a 3D cake for my first entry, I decided to do a 2D cake for my second entry because, a. Variety is always good, right? and b. I probably should've been preparing to go back to school next week instead of making cake in the first place, but I figured since a 2D cake wouldn't take as long I could justify it :)
I liked this design because it looked so historic/realistic but then cartoony at the same time with the glasses! For this cake I used a butter recipe golden cake mix (one of my favorites!) and started out by making one large square cake and two smaller square cakes. Out of these I cut the heads, frosted them with vanilla icing, and covered them in fondant that I dyed light blue. After that the messy part was over (it's amazing how quickly I make a mess everywhere when I bake), but next was the long part! Using a mixture of vodka and food coloring, I hand-painted all of the features of the faces using a pretty tiny brush. It took much longer than I had originally expected, about 2 hours for each face. To distract myself from how my hand was starting to hurt towards the end since I hold my paint brush rather awkwardly, I listened to old episodes of Friends as I worked which was pretty entertaining. Anyway, I had made the glasses out of fondant after I finished covering the cakes so that they could harden, and once the painting was done they were ready to go as well!
This cake took one night to bake, and then 2 days to finish decorating. I'd been eating cake scraps as I was decorating so I wasn't too hungry for a piece by the time it was over, but I cut it up and had a piece anyway!
This cake was fun to make, but it was also a lot of fun to photograph! I played around with a wide angle lens to give a cool fish-eye effect to some of the photos.
Thanks for checking out my cake and rambling story too :)
