Flowers in the Attic cake by Amy Anderla

Description

This was a team effort between me and my two nephews – Drew (18) and Grant (14). It was a three-day process. On day one, Drew and I began crafting butterfly wings and brain splatters from melted chocolate. On day two, I baked the cake layers (a weird, extra-moist raspberry cake with Jell-o in the list of ingredients) and unsuccessfully attempted to carve the suicidal girl figure from white fondant. On day three, Drew and I made a dark chocolate buttercream frosting with lots of black food coloring, while Grant busted out his artistic side and painted our main figure, using black food coloring on white fondant. Assembly was probably the most fun part: We deliberated over the placement of each and every butterfly and brain splat and were excited to see things coming together. We then went out for pizza and came back to cut and eat the cake… and to see what happens to your teeth and tongue when you eat enough black frosting.
