Extraordinary Observer cake by Georgia Suter

Description

As I saw “Extraordinary Observer” it was love at first sign. I really loved the extraordinary idea of the design. At the beginning I wasn´t sure of making it 2D or 3D because by the 3D there was no room for a cake…. but at the end I decided to do it and this is the result….hope you enjoy watching it as I did making it !
I begun making a “pastillage paste” (sorry, I don´t know the correct translation in English...it´s made of confectionary sugar, gelatin and water) for the eye and Gum paste for the man and his telescope. In the meanwhile the half ball dried y started with the modeling of the figures… quite hard job being the peaces so small ! Once everything was done and dry I struggled with the feet of the telescope and the chair to fit in straight vertically in to the curvature of the eye…and also thinking of an idea how to fix the complete figure vertically to the cake. At the end I decided to add an extra peace of “pastillage paste” underneath the eye to stack a wooden support in, and to the cake.
After everything fitted like a Tetris I started painting piece by piece with powder colors, stencils and some Vodka. Once everything was dry I glue it with royal icing.
After the figure was done I started with baking the cake…a nice Spanish apple pie (baking powder, eggs, yogurt, olive oil, sugar, apples, cinnamon and some lemon drops), I wet it with a cinnamon and lemon juice, no filling because the cake was a birthday present for my mum and she doesn´t like fillings. Covered the cake with butter cream frosting and prepared it for the end covering with white fondant and let it ready for painting.
I spend about 5 days enjoying it…not the whole day but quite a lot of hours…I calculate that about 30 hours with modeling , drying and baking.
It’s the first time I participate to a cake contest and have to say that I fell very happy doing it and also with the result of the cake…never thought I’ll cope with it! It has been a great pleasure doing and eating it….it was delicious !
